Choosing a course also means choosing the tasks you will learn, the tools you will use and the work you will eventually describe to an employer. The 2026–2027 intake is a useful moment to put those questions at the centre of your decision.
September’s announcement
On September 7, 2026, OFPPT announced overall capacity of 424,000 training places, 18 additional institutions and 193 new, restructured or updated programmes. These figures describe training provision; they are neither a list of places still available nor a promise of employment.
Start with a working day
Our advice is to picture a day in your intended occupation before choosing a course. Would you rather diagnose a fault, welcome a customer, organise stock or work on a digital project? This simple question helps you look beyond a fashionable course title.
Then read a few entry-level vacancies. Identify the tasks, schedules, software and equipment mentioned. You are not looking for a perfect match today, but for a clear connection between what you will learn and what you want to do.
Questions to ask the training centre
Ask how practical sessions work, what the placement arrangements are and how trainees receive help finding a placement. Check the qualification, entry requirements and the institution’s own timetable too.
Travel deserves as much attention as the syllabus. Add up transport, meals and any accommodation costs. An interesting course also needs to be one you can attend consistently. To establish whether you can still apply, contact the centre directly: an announcement about the new intake does not confirm admission.
Build your first application while studying
Keep a record of your projects: the problem, your method, the result and your personal contribution. A clear account makes it easier to discuss skills in an interview. Always respect company confidentiality and ask permission before sharing placement photographs.
