Why understand your payslip?
The payslip (or salary slip) is a mandatory document that your employer must give you every month. Many employees in Morocco do not take the time to check it, which can lead to undetected errors: unpaid CNSS contributions, forgotten seniority bonus, or unpaid overtime.
Understanding your salary slip means protecting your current and future rights (retirement, illness, unemployment).
Structure of the Moroccan payslip
A payslip in Morocco is divided into 4 main parts:
1. Header: general information
- Employer's company name: company name, address, employer CNSS number
- Employee identity: last name, first name, CIN, CNSS number (registration)
- Professional information: position, category, hire date, seniority
- Period covered: month and year of payment
2. Upper part: gross pay elements
- Base salary: number of hours x hourly rate, or flat monthly salary
- Seniority bonus: percentage based on seniority (5% to 25%)
- Overtime: number of hours x increased rate
- Various bonuses: transport, meal allowance, performance, 13th month, etc.
- Benefits in kind: housing, company car (valued)
- = Total gross salary
3. Middle part: deductions (social and tax contributions)
- CNSS (social contribution): 4,48% of gross salary (capped at 6.000 DH)
- AMO (health insurance): 2,26% of gross salary (no cap)
- CIMR or supplementary retirement: varies by company (3% to 6%)
- Mutual insurance: if the company offers one (employee share)
- IR (Income Tax): calculated after deductions
- Other deductions: salary advance, loan, wage garnishment
4. Lower part: net salary
- Taxable net salary = Gross - social contributions - professional expenses
- IR withheld = according to the progressive scale
- Net salary payable = Gross - all deductions
Detailed calculation: from gross to net
Let's take the example of an employee with a gross salary of 8.000 DH/month, 3 years of seniority:
| Item | Calculation | Amount | |---------|--------|---------| | Base salary | - | 8.000 DH | | Seniority bonus (5%) | 8.000 x 5% | 400 DH | | **Gross salary** | - | **8.400 DH** | | CNSS (-4,48% on 6.000 max) | 6.000 x 4,48% | -268,80 DH | | AMO (-2,26% on all) | 8.400 x 2,26% | -189,84 DH | | Professional expenses (-20%) | (8.400-458,64) x 20% | -1.588,27 DH | | Taxable net salary | - | 6.342,36 DH | | IR (20% scale) | according to scale | -488,47 DH | | Family dependents deduction | -30 DH/person | variable | | **Net salary** | 8.400 - deductions | **~7.453 DH** |The IR Scale in Morocco
Income Tax is calculated in progressive brackets on the annual taxable net salary:
| Annual bracket | Rate | Amount to deduct | |-----------------|------|-----------------| | 0 - 30.000 DH | 0% | 0 | | 30.001 - 50.000 DH | 10% | 3.000 DH | | 50.001 - 60.000 DH | 20% | 8.000 DH | | 60.001 - 80.000 DH | 30% | 14.000 DH | | 80.001 - 180.000 DH | 34% | 17.200 DH | | Over 180.000 DH | 38% | 24.400 DH |For the monthly calculation, divide the brackets by 12. Family dependents deductions (-30 DH/month per dependent, max 6) are subtracted from the gross IR.
Professional expenses
Before calculating IR, a 20% deduction is applied to taxable gross salary for professional expenses. This deduction is capped at 30.000 DH/year (or 2.500 DH/month).
Formula: Taxable net salary = (Gross salary - CNSS - AMO) x 0,80
Common errors to check
Here are the points to check each month on your payslip:
Frequent errors
- Missing or incorrectly calculated seniority bonus: check the percentage against your hire date
- Unpaid or incorrectly calculated overtime premiums: compare with your time records
- CNSS contribution on a lower salary than actual: the employer sometimes declares a lower salary to pay fewer contributions
- Base salary below SMIG: check the hourly rate
- Unjustified deductions: absence not deducted, deduction without explanation
- Incorrectly calculated IR: wrong scale or family dependents not deducted
How to check your CNSS declaration
- Log in to damancom.ma with your CNSS number
- Compare the declared salary with your actual gross salary
- Check that all months are declared (no "gaps")
- If there is a discrepancy: report it to the employer, then to CNSS
Mandatory elements on the payslip
According to the Labor Code, your salary slip must include:
- Employer's name and address
- Company's CNSS affiliation number
- Employee's last name, first name, and CNSS number
- Professional qualification
- Period and number of days/hours worked
- Nature and amount of bonuses and allowances
- Amount of deductions (CNSS, AMO, IR)
- Payment date and net amount paid
If your employer does not give you a payslip, it is an offense punishable by a fine.
Keeping payslips
- Recommended duration: keep your payslips for life
- They serve as proof for calculating CNSS retirement
- They are necessary in case of a dispute with a former employer
- They are requested for a bank loan, rental, or visa
- If lost, ask your employer or CNSS for a duplicate
What to do in case of an error?
- Step 1: report the error in writing to your HR manager or accountant
- Step 2: request a correction on the following month's payslip
- Step 3: if refused, contact the labor inspectorate with your payslips as evidence
- Step 4: as a last resort, the labor court can order payment of the amounts owed (with damages)
The limitation period for claiming unpaid wages is 2 years from the date of the contested payslip.
